COMPAGNIE ROYAL DE LUXE

For almost 30 years the name Royal de Luxe has been associated with exceptional and spectacular open-air theatre which has tempted audiences all over the world out into streets and squares by their thousands.

The French company and their founder and artistic director Jean Luc Courcoult established an international reputation with works such as »La demi-finale du Waterclash«, »Roman-photo tournage«, »La véritable histoire de France« and »Le péplum«. In recent years Royal de Luxe have created theatrical events with gigantic and incredibly agile human and animal figures which have become the company’s trademark. The »Giant Saga« which continues to this day in the most varied locations in the world in ever new stories began in 1993 with »Le Géant tombé du ciel« (The Giant who fell from the sky): For three days the Big Giant, controlled by over 30 people, made his way for the first time through the streets of Le Havre. The Little Giantess enchanted the whole of London in 2006 in »The Sultan’s Elephant« and afterwards received invitations from all over the world. In 2007 she could be seen with »Le rhinocéros caché« (The hidden rhinoceros) in Santiago de Chile, where more than two million people turned the first Giants spectacle outside Europe into a triumph. The same year the Little Giantess also appeared in Iceland in »Le geyser de Reykjavik«.

Following the premiere of »La Géante du Titanic et le Scaphandrier« from 5th to 7th June 2009 in Nantes, Royal de Luxe will present a new episode of the Giants Saga together with spielzeit’europa in Berlin from 1st to 4th October: »The Giants Arrive – a Fairy Tale for Berlin« commemorates the 20th anniversary of the fall of the wall by telling the magical story of the Big Giant and his niece the Little Giantess who are reunited after many years of separation at the Brandenburg Gate. Royal de Luxe were already seen as part of spielzeit’europa in Berlin in 2008 with »La Révolte des Mannequins«. This installation in the shop windows of the Berlin department store KaDeWe captivated passers-by day and night for a week in November 2008.
